and didn’t recognize much of yourself in it other than to know that what you wrote was good. and you wonder what the hell happened to THAT writer?

All the time. I find things I wrote while trolling the WayBack Machine at archives.org and say, “Damn, that was good. I hope I can do that again.”
For what it’s worth, I’m writing again, but posting at a new place. What used to be JimFormation is now ofKingsandCarnies.com. I know you used to visit, maybe you’ll stop by my new digs.
