Plan Your Epitaph Day

Did you know that November 2nd is “Plan Your Epitaph Day”?  It’s an interesting thought, really.  November 1st is All Saint’s Day, a day when, in Catholic tradition, you visit the graves of loved ones.  Why wouldn’t you think about what should be written upon your own gravestone?

To be honest, I hadn’t given it much thought until I was perusing the online newspapers this morning and saw the date.  I am really longing for the paper and ink of the Washington Post, but no where in the Dallas area can I find it.  I may  have to settle for a New York Times because the Fort Worth Star Telegram is practically useless.  but I digress.

The cemetery I visit most often would be Arlington National Cemetery and it is simple there.  Name.  Rank.  Date of Birth. Date of Death.  Service to our Country.  My grandmother’s grave simply says “Beloved Mother”.  But there are many graves that say much more than that.   It’s interesting to think about - more of a statement on life - your philosophy, I guess.

If I had to write my epitaph today, I think it would be something like:

“She learned to live outside the box - and found life lovely there”

What would yours say?

I’ve always just figured mine would be something like “Excuse me for not standing” or “See? I told you I was sick.”

It needs to be something funny. There’s not enough humor in the grave yards.
